Favorite Outfits of 2012

When looking back at my favorite outfits from this year I can't help but smile.  I have learned so much this year about myself and my personal style through blogging and I am looking forward to what the new year has in store.

Currently Craving: Moto Jackets

Lately, I have been obsessing over moto jackets.  I really love how they can be edgy and sexy at the same time.  Here are a few that I am lusting after.

Me Time

Now that the semester is over and I have some free time on my hands, I've been spending it doing things that I don't get to do while I'm in enjoy life.  Yesterday, I got a make over at the MAC counter at Macy's by the only makeup artist that I trust to do my makeup, Whitney Rae (@WhitneyRae_MUA via Twitter).  I had so much fun and I was amazed that a little makeup can make me (and so many women) feel so good.

Communicating Through Style

There's no denying that personal style can be used to communicate who you are, your mood, etc.  However, it can also be used to command attention, which I am certainly guilty of doing lately.  Sometimes I use bold prints and colors to gain the attention of a guy I’m interested in with the hope that he'll notice my outfit and overlook the awkward and  nervous 15 year old girl syndrome that has plagued me as of late.

Throwback Thursday: Happy Thanksgiving!!

Since I have such great memories of Thanksgiving, I thought that I would share a couple of my fav photos of past Thanksgivings.

14 months: Feeding myself.

Animal Instincts

This season reptile prints are everywhere and, I must admit, I'm beginning to really love them (though they could never replace leopard prints in my heart).  Anyway, making animal prints work appropriate can be difficult, but a couple of easy ways to do so are through scarves, pumps, handbags or other accessories.  However, if you are more daring, you may want to try a blouse, skirt or even a dress in animal print and then add a blazer or sweater like I did in this outfit.

Just a Jacket

When I was first putting together this outfit, it was going to be all black.  However, after looking in the mirror, I felt like it needed something.  That something was this brocade-esque jacket.

Monday Mourning?

You all know how much I hate mornings, especially Mondays, but this week they are getting worse. Since we missed several days of class due to Hurricane Sandy, we are being forced to make up those hours of class.  So, instead of going to class at 9am, I have to be there at 8:45, which is the reason for my Monday "mourning." I realize that's only 15 minutes earlier, but because of my long commute, it actually means that I must get up an hour earlier.

Shapely Shopping Share of the Day: Fur Vests

Fur vests are a great addition to your closet now that the temperatures are getting chillier. What's great about a fur vest is that it is a perfect layering piece and it can be worn in lieu of a coat or jacket if the temperatures are cool, but not yet cold.  Some curvy girls stray away from fur vests in fear of creating bulk. While I don't think that should be a concern, the options I've compiled below seem to alleviate those concerns. Any thoughts?

Shapely Shopping Share of the Day: Leather Skirts

One of this season's must-haves is a leather skirt.  Whether it's short or long, full or pencil, a leather (or faux) skirt is a great piece to have in any closet, especially as the temperatures drop.  What's great about a leather skirt is that it can be worn in so many different ways (with blouses, sweaters, or blazers).  It is also versatile enough to be worn for work or play.  Here are couple of options I've found that will certainly look great on a curvy body.

Shapely Shopping Share of the Day: More Peplum

I've received a couple of questions from readers about where to find pieces with peplum.  So, I've put together a few peplum items that I like.

Shapely Shopping Share of the Day: Printed Jeans!

It's no secret that I absolutely love jeans and would totally wear them for almost all occasions.  This summer I really loved colored jeans (and I still do), but this season I'm gravitating toward printed jeans.  Here, are a few pairs that I'm currently obsessing over.

The Perfect Peplum

I've been on the hunt for a well-fitting peplum top for some time now and this top from ASOS is prefect.  From the fit, to the fabric, to the cute polka dots (that I adore) is just fantastic.  Now you all know I do not do much online shopping, especially from retailers that do not have an actual bricks and mortar store; however, I think that ASOS will be my one exception.  They have some adorable pieces for plus-sized women in their Curve(+) section, the quality is decent for the price, and their return policy is fair and convenient.

Hurry Makes Worry?

Since I'm always busy with school and work, I'm usually in a hurry.  So, on those mornings (particularly Mondays) that I don't have time to stand in front of my closet and worry about what to wear it's great to have a go-to outfit that I know is cute and comfy.

Meet MYNT!

When I first saw MYNT1792's collection at Full Figured Fashion Week over the summer it was definitely love at first sight.  I was delighted to finally see a plus size brand that truly had a younger customer in mind when designing pieces for their collection.  So, to get a better look at their collection, last month I went to their showroom, spoke with a few members of their team, and, of course, tried on the clothes (which was so much fun).

Two jackets that I love, which are currently available.

MYNT's collection offers fun, on trend, edgy pieces that fit great.  However, the most important thing to me is that they are providing the plus-sized woman with quality pieces, which is extremely hard to find among plus size brands and retailers.  The one thing that I would have liked to have seen  is more options as far as blouses, skirts and dresses.  Other than that I am looking forward to the complete launch of their collection, particularly that ivory faux leather jacket that I'm wearing below.

Loving My Leggings

I usually don't wear leggings because I'm very much a jeans girl.  However, when I saw these black and white abstract print, snakeskin embossed leggings I knew I had to have them.  The fit is great and they are surprisingly comfortable.  I paired them with an over-sized black sweater, my True Religion Harrison ankle boots and added a pop of color with my mustard yellow Kathy Van Zeeland purse.  What I love about this outfit is that it can be worn for a night on the town or to class (which is where I am heading right now).

A Case of the Mondays

I'm not a morning person at all and, unfortunately for me, I have class at 9am on MONDAY MORNINGS!! It's just not right!  It really isn't.  How can I be expected to absorb boring legal information at 9am?  I mean who thought up the idea of having class before 11am?  Just stupid.  Don't get me wrong the material is actually interesting, but at 9am all professors sound like the adults on Charlie Brown (wah, wah, wah, wah...).  Thank God my professor makes jokes because otherwise I would fall asleep in class and, somehow, I just don't think drool would look good with my outfit.

Shapely Shopping Share of the Day: Coats

With coat season knocking at our door, I thought it would be great to share a couple of coats that I am lusting after.

I love these two coats from ASOS.  I love that they both flare at the waist.  I also appreciate that ASOS, unlike a lot of other retailers, is offering more than just basic black (read: boring) coats.

Terrific Tuesday?

Something about the rain this past week has just drained me of all my motivation.  So, in an attempt to break out of my rainy rut, today I went bold and bright. I paired my mustard sweater with my blue Not Your Daughter Jeans, ruffle-textured tank and my beautiful 5/48 leopard pumps. The combination of these colors and prints are certainly giving me the boost I need to have a terrific Tuesday.

September 30, 2012

Saturday is my favorite day of the week.  It is the one day of the week that I actually get to wake up without the alarm clock (a true blessing), relax and get a little me time in.  Yesterday, I went to lunch and did a little shopping at the Brooklyn Flea Market with my sister, which was a lot of fun since I've never been vintage shopping.  (Don't judge me.)  Anyway, I really enjoyed it.  It was just so cool looking at the different pieces and, of course, hanging out with my sister.

Make It Work

One of my favorite finds this summer was this tiered tie-dyed Michael Kors maxi skirt that was a steal at $30 from $100.  The only problem was that I didn't like the fit on me as a skirt (probably because it is not a plus-size), but I also didn't want to let a little thing like fit cause me to lose out on this adorable printed skirt.  So, instead, I made it work by finding another way to wear it.  I hiked it up and made it into a tube dress.  I then paired it with this American Rag crocheted sweater vest, my Lane Bryant belt, Coach purse and my Michael Kors pumps. This is a great dress/skirt because it can easily go from summer to fall.

Fall Favorites

Fall is definitely my favorite time of year.  I love the colors, especially the array of earth tones that can be found among the leaves, on the runway and in my closet.  And now that fall has official begun, according to me and the weather service, I thought it would be great to share two of the trends that I am obsessing over right now - snakeskin and florals.  Below are a few pieces that can easily be added to the curvy girl's closet.

I love bold animal prints and would gladly wear them as a focal point in my outfit.  However, some may not be as daring.  So, another great way to add this print to your wardrobe is through accessories like a great handbag, scarf or hat.  Here are a few pieces that I want to add to my wardrobe this fall.

My Bestie is Back!

My best friend is in New York!! This is a rare occasion and I am so excited because I never get to see her since she left New York (and me) to live in Florida.  I'm super glad that she is back even if it's only for a few days...after all New York isn't the same without her. Saturday night, we are going to go out and about and have a fab time looking good, but being bad.  I plan to wear this sheer zebra print poncho, my DKNY skinnies and Guess platform pumps. I'll add pops of color with my red Guess purse and yellow D&G shades.

Pretty in Print!

On Saturday night, I went out to celebrate my friend's birthday and had a fantastic time might I add.  We went to dinner at SEA, a cute Thai restaurant in the Meatpacking District. The food was decent, the service left a lot to be desired, but the company was great.

The Beginning of the End: Yellow Jeans & Animal Print

Last week was the beginning of my 3L year (the last year of law school).  While some say I should be excited about this, I'm not.  I have a grueling class schedule, post-graduation job-hunting, and let's not forget that looming dark cloud that is the BAR EXAM.  Thinking about all of this just makes me want to take a long nap.

Throwback Thursday:The Maxi Dress

My mom loves to remind me, as if I don't already realize, that the trends we see now are never new, but constantly reinvented.   And in an effort to further her point, she went to the attic and brought out one of her favorite maxi dresses from the 70s.  We decided that it would be fun to share her favorite and my favorite maxi dress.  Since my mom is really shy she remained behind the camera while I attempted to get into a dress that fit her at her smallest - a size 4 by the standards in the 70s.  Well, here I am rocking my mom's maxi dress and my maxi dress.

Shopping While Shapely: Touring NYC

Several of you have asked me to do posts about shopping while on a budget. Curvy girls all know that plus-sized clothing tends to be more expensive than straight sized clothing. This is because brands/designers say they use more fabric, different sewing techniques, blah, blah, blah. Anyway, the way I sort of stick to my budget is that I am a hardcore bargain hunter. Now, I am not on that Extreme Couponing tip, mainly because I have a life and that crap looks time consuming and tedious, but I do have a system that allows me to save money. My system is that I rarely (1%) buy anything at the retail price. If I did my whole wardrobe (including shoes, purses, accessories) would probably be some astronomical number that I would rather not share. So, I will be doing monthly posts about Shopping While Shapely. I will include my shopping tips and tricks as well as an outfit that I've put together for under $100.

Hazy and Lazy...

My internship is over, which means I have two weeks to relax and be least in theory. The reality is that I have law school related crap that I have to do.  Currently, I have to study for the stupid MPRE (an ethical exam required for attorneys) that I am taking on Friday.  I find it completely unnecessary considering that an ethics class is already required at most, if not all, law schools.  So rather than going into a haze of bad tv, figuring out how to apply false eyelashes and singing into my hairbrush at the top of my lungs to my favorite songs, which is what I wanted to do today, I took the stupid studious approach and went to the library to study.

Curvy, Casual and Chic

Last Sunday, I went out with my friend to brunch at the Bourbon Street Café in Bayside.  I'm not much of a morning person at all, especially on the weekend, but I went anyway because my friend really wanted to try their brunch. The food was mediocre at best, which simply confirmed my belief that nothing is worth getting up before noon.

Dazzling in Dots

Dots, dots, dots...I love polka dots and lucky for me they are everywhere this season.  I saw these adorable cropped polka dot pants at Old Navy the other day and I knew they were coming home with me. I love how well the pants fit and that they are so comfy.  I wore them with a white off-the-shoulder blouse, white BCBGeneration peep toe pumps, a pink Lucky Brand purse and my yellow D&G sunglasses.

From Day to Play: Going Wild

Lately, some of my curvy girlfriends have been complaining about the difficulties in finding clothes that can go from day to play.  My solution: when buying pieces for your wardrobe be more thoughtful. Think about how the pieces that you are buying can be worn. Can they be easily dressed up or down? Can they be worn in different ways (i.e. a skirt as a dress)? If the answers to these questions are no, you should leave them right there on the rack.

Today, I decided to wear an outfit that can go from day to evening with minimal effort.

Take Me Out to the Ball Game

Today, my co-workers and I went to the Yankee game.  This is my first time going to a game and would have preferred to go to a Mets game (since I am not now nor have I ever been a Yankee fan), but majority rules.  It was a good game, but I couldn't stay until the end.  Baseball games run long and I have work in the morning.

A Trace of Lace

This season lace has been everywhere from the catwalk to the sidewalk.  I love lace because it can be so pretty and feminine.  It is also light, which is perfect for the summer.  Today, I wore this little white lace dress to work and I got so many compliments.  I have been stalking this dress on for the past few weeks and imagine my surprise to actually find it in the store (and 65% off too). I paired it with my Lane Bryant belt, my Michael Kors strappy platform pumps and my favorite cross-body bag that I got from Ghana, West Africa when I went on a study abroad trip a few years ago.

Swimsuit Season: Choosing a Plus Size Swimsuit

I know, I it that time already? For most women, this time of year, whether they are plus-sized or not, can arouse insecurities because of the dreaded swimsuit.  Buying a swimsuit can be challenging, but if you pay attention to fit, cut and lining (for support), swimsuit shopping will be a breeze.  I have compiled some of my favorite pieces that are designed for curvy ladies so that you can hit the beach and feel fantastic.

I am a firm believer that a printed swimsuit can be quite flattering on all sizes.  The right print can distract the eye and make the body look slimmer by concealing some of those hills and valleys that so many of us are not too fond of.

Emerging Designer: Ashley Nell Tipton

Recently, I stumbled onto the work of emerging designer Ashley Nell Tipton via her website and then again at the Indie Fashion Show during Full Figured Fashion Week.  Her designs were comprised of bold colors and flattering silhouettes that I cannot wait to wear.

Blooming in Black

The weather often influences my choice of outfit.  Last week it was so gloomy and muggy so I decided to go with a beige and black floral print Alfani top (but according to Macy's it is a jacket).  I love this blouse because it is so versatile.  I can wear it to work with some black trousers or dress it down (as I did here) with a great pair of skinny jeans.  I wore this to dinner at this cute little Thai restaurant in Brooklyn with my sister.

Yellow Jeans!

I don't know about you, but I absolutely love that colored jeans are trending this season.  However, finding the perfect pair has been a little frustrating because many stores do not carry a variety of colors in my size and when they do they aren't the fit I want.  I really wanted a colored jean that was either slim fit or skinny and "flatters" my shape in all the right ways.  I have found a couple of places that offer colored jeans if you are searching for a pair too. (Here, here, here, here, and oh yea here.)

I wore this pair of plus-size yellow Ralph Lauren slim fit jeans out and about and I absolutely love them.  I love that all the areas that I would prefer to conceal are in fact hidden despite the very bright color.  What are your thoughts?  Have you found the perfect pair of colored jeans?

My favorite accessory…flats!!

As much as I adore heels, anyone who knows me is aware of my obsession with flats.  I live for flats. They suit my lifestyle as a busy law student who commutes to school and cannot deal with excessive foot pain during those long days of extremely boring lectures, annoying classmates, and lugging around a purse that weighs at least 25lbs due to over-sized legal texts and a large laptop.

The only problem I have is that CUTE and COMFORTABLE flats are often hard for me to find because I have a limited budget and, as I said, a low tolerance for foot pain (I know beauty is pain, but I just can't take it sometimes).  But the other day I lucked out and was able to find some very cute and comfy flats by Enzo Angiolini. They are true to size and the fit is great.  If you are in the market for a great flat, these are a great option because they are definitely an all-day shoe.  Anyway, here I am yesterday rocking my new flats as I get ready to spend eight hours in the library studying for my employment law exam.

Online Shopping?

I rarely buy clothes online because, as I have said in a previous post, I genuinely enjoy the in-store shopping experience.  To me, there is nothing better than spending a quiet morning in the store browsing and buying (before some parents see fit to bring their screaming and ill-mannered children to the stores).  However, the other day, I spoke to a friend of mine who seems to really like shopping on-line.  In particular, she seems to be enamored with the items that she purchased at ASOS Curve, which has clothes that run from size 16-22.  I took a look at their website and found a few items that I like and may buy (depending on the availability of funds).

Locked in the Library

I am so excited that classes are over, but it means that finals are right around the corner. :sigh:  So, it is time to barricade myself in my room or head to the library and study furiously for 2 weeks .  Today, I opted for the library because I couldn't bare staring at the four walls in my room without any human interaction any longer.  Here's what I wore to the library.

Macy's Wishlist

It seems that most of the clothing options for curvy women are online.  This is really frustrating because I'm not one for online shopping at all.  For me, it's all about being in the store so that I can feel the fabric, try on the clothes and enjoy the atmosphere of the store.  However, recently, the clothes on has me hooked on their website.  I have checked their website everyday so I do not miss a sale and I have accumulated quite a long wishlist/saved shopping bag.  Right now there are a few dresses that I cannot wait to get my hands on.  I am particularly in love with the yellow Jessica Simpson Dress (the perfect dress for my birthday) and the printed maxi dress.  I really need to stop my crazy shopping sprees, but I just can't control myself.

April 25, 2012

Friends & Family @Macy's!!!!

Confession: I spend a lot of time at Macy's.  When I say a lot, I mean A LOT.  I am there every other day and most of the staff knows me.  Shame on me...I know, but I love Macy's and if you are a bargain hunter like myself, you know that the key to finding a great bargain at Macy's is shopping (but not necessarily buying) often.

Anyway, Macy's is having their Friends and Family Event, which is very exciting for me because there is an additional 25% off of original, sale and clearance items.  This is a big deal because the coupon that you must use in order to get the discount is even applicable on designers, which almost never happens.  I decided that because this is such a big event I should go to the  Herald Square Macy's to take advantage of the relatively larger selection and no sales tax. If you are going to the Herald Square Macy's also, keep in mind that they are remodeling the purse area and the selection of purses is not what it was.  However, they have done a decent job of expanding the Macy's Woman (their plus size section) department.  Be sure to check out the sale and let me know about your great finds.

Organizing Your Jewelry

I love to accessorize, but storing my jewelry has always been frustrating.  Long necklaces are particularly annoying because they can get tangled and broken causing me to throw them away (along with my money).  So, the other day I was looking for an easier way to store my jewelry and I came across two cute options that I wanted to share.

The Mirror Jewelry Chest
